The Magnetic Fields

The Magnetic Fields, "Realism"

14 Feb 2010 | by Matthew Walker
Surprisingly, but the music world still has things that never cease to amaze. Thereby, The Magnetic Fields lyrics astonish its realism and sincerity – only few have the courage to sing about things they have never had and never will have. Sometimes such creativity can sound too much dolefully and depressing, but in this case it does not spoil the band’s works and even makes its sounding more elegant and forms a peculiar aura around it. Surely, band’s frontman Stephin Merritt attempted to get closer to the listeners and tried to make newest release more light and intelligible. And he managed it quite good – “Realism” sounds confidently practical and at the same time enchantingly. It also surprises with its sonic ground, which is largely acoustic than band’s previous releases. Sufficiently rich variety of musical instruments was blended with a familiar drum kit without using synthesizers. Sophisticated music lovers can easily determine that the set’s sounding resembles British folk of the Sixties and Seventies. Track "You Must Be Out of Your Mind" skillfully combines lines of violin and banjo, graceful vocals laid over airy music of “Interlude” charm with its simplicity, meanwhile romantic "I Don't Know What To Say" is helpless with speech and the final track “From a Sinking Boat” casts a gloom over the listener.
